Quaker Wedding Certificate of Robert Gilbert and Mary Bee

WHEREAS; Robert Gilbert of Ceres Town, McKean County in the State of Pennsylvania, son of Robert Gilbert and Mary his wife (the former deceased) and Mary Bee of the same place, daughter of Thomas Bee and Mary his wife (the former deceased) having declared their intentions of marriage with each other before several Monthly meetings of the People called Quakers, at Muncey Monthly Meeting in Lycoming and State aforesaid, according to the good order used among them and having consent of Parents, their said proposal of marriage was allowed by the said Meeting. Now these are to certify whom it may concern that for full accomplishing their said intentions, this twenty-first day of the eigth month in the Year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and five, they, the said Robert Gilbert and Mary Bee, appeared in a public meeting of the said People at Muncey aforesaid, and the said Robert Gilbert taking the said Mary Bee by the hand, did on this solemn occasion openly declare, that he took her the said Mary Bee, to be his Wife, promising with the Lord's assistance to be unto her a loving and faithful Husband until death should separate them, and then in the same assembly the said Mary Bee did in like manner declare that she took the said Robert Gilbert to be her Husband, promising with the Lord's assistance to be unto him a loving and faithful Wife, until death should separate them. And moreover they, the said Robert Gilbert and Mary Bee, she according to the custom of marriage assuming the name of her Husband, as a further confirmation thereof, did then and there in these presence set their Hands; and we whose names are also hereunto subscribed being present at the solemnization of the said Marriage and Subscription, have as witness hereunto set our Hands the Day and Year above written.

NOTE: Mary Bee was grandmother of Mrs. Mary Lewis, of Vineland, and at the time of her wedding she and Robert Gilbert had to travel from Ceres Town to Muncey, a distance of about 100 miles, in order to secure the required number of witnesses. They were there the several weeks necessary for the declaring of their intentions before the Meeting, prior to the marriage.
